The Toyota Hilux is one of New Zealand's most popular vehicles - and one of the most common on our tuning list. Whether you're towing, working, or just want better performance from your daily, a diesel ECU remap makes a noticeable difference.
Why tune a Hilux?
Toyota's factory calibration on the Hilux is conservative. It's designed for global markets with varying fuel quality, extreme temperatures, and strict emissions targets. In New Zealand, with quality diesel and moderate conditions, there's significant headroom in the ECU calibration that a remap can unlock.
The most common reasons Hilux owners come to us:
- More towing confidence - the factory Hilux can feel underpowered when towing a boat, trailer, or caravan. A remap adds meaningful low-end torque so the engine pulls harder without hunting through gears.
- Better throttle response - factory drive-by-wire calibration on the Hilux has noticeable lag. A remap sharpens throttle response for a more connected driving feel.
- Improved fuel economy - optimised injection timing and fuelling efficiency typically improve economy by 5-12% under normal driving.
- Smoother power delivery - less turbo lag, smoother torque curve, and more predictable overtaking performance.
Hilux models we tune
We tune all modern Hilux diesel platforms:
- KUN series (2005-2015) - 3.0L 1KD-FTV turbo diesel. A well-proven platform that responds strongly to remapping with significant torque gains.
- GUN series (2015-2024) - 2.8L 1GD-FTV turbo diesel. The most common Hilux on NZ roads. Excellent remap potential with 20-30% torque gains typical.
- GD series (2024+) - 2.8L turbo diesel. Same engine family as the GUN with updated calibration. Responds well to a factory ECU remap.
We also tune the Hilux Surf and Fortuner, which share the same drivetrain.
Expected gains
On a GUN-series 2.8L Hilux (the most common platform), a custom diesel remap typically delivers:
- 15-25 kW increase in power
- 50-80 Nm increase in torque
- Noticeably improved throttle response
- 5-12% fuel economy improvement (driving style dependent)
The older 3.0L KUN-series Hilux sees similar percentage gains. Exact results depend on the condition of your vehicle, mileage, and any supporting modifications.
DPF-safe tuning
All our Hilux tunes are DPF-safe and emissions compliant. We optimise the ECU calibration within parameters that allow the DPF to regenerate normally. The DPF, EGR, and all emissions equipment remain fully functional.
If your Hilux has existing DPF issues (warning lights, limp mode, blocked filter), we can diagnose the problem before tuning. In some cases, a forced regeneration or DPF service is needed before a remap will deliver the best results.
The tuning process
A Hilux diesel remap at The Torque Lab typically takes 3-4 hours:
- Pre-tune diagnostic scan for existing fault codes
- Baseline power runs on the Mainline hub dyno
- ECU read via OBD port
- Custom calibration - fuel injection timing, rail pressure, boost targets, and torque management
- Flash the modified calibration back to the ECU
- Post-tune dyno runs to verify gains
- Before-and-after dyno sheets provided
For Hilux models that can't run on the dyno (solid-axle 4WDs under certain configurations), we use our ECU file calibration service - reading the factory file, calibrating with proven platform data, and flashing the optimised file back.
Supporting modifications
A remap alone delivers strong results on a stock Hilux. For owners wanting maximum benefit, these modifications complement the tune:
- Performance exhaust - freer-flowing exhaust reduces backpressure and complements the remap. 3-inch systems are popular on the 2.8L.
- High-flow air intake - matches increased fuelling from the remap for better breathing.
- Intercooler upgrade - reduces intake temperatures for more consistent power, especially when towing in summer.
- EGR blanking plate - reduces soot recirculation while keeping the EGR system intact (discuss with us first).
None of these are required for a remap - they just maximise the benefit.
Pricing
A Toyota Hilux diesel remap at The Torque Lab costs $600-$1,000 NZD depending on the model and scope of work. Every tune includes before-and-after dyno sheets (where applicable) and a road test. See our ECU tuning page or contact us with your Hilux details for an accurate quote.
