Why Tune Your Diesel

More Power, Better Economy, Safer Towing

Factory diesel calibrations are conservative. Manufacturers tune for global markets, extreme climates, and the lowest-quality fuel they might encounter. In New Zealand, your engine has headroom that the factory left on the table.

A custom diesel remap unlocks that headroom. You get more torque across the rev range, stronger turbo response, and better fuel economy under normal driving. Towing becomes less strained - the engine pulls harder without hunting through gears, and the turbo spools earlier under load.

For 4WDs and vehicles that can't run on a traditional dyno, our ECU file calibration service means we can still deliver a precision tune. We read the factory ECU, calibrate the file using real-world data from your platform, and flash the optimised calibration back - no dyno required.

Every tune is built on our Mainline hub dyno with real-time data logging. We monitor exhaust gas temperatures, boost pressure, rail pressure, and injection timing throughout the process. You get before-and-after dyno sheets showing exactly what changed.

How Diesel Tuning Works

Three steps from stock to tuned. The full process typically takes half a day.

Read & Baseline

We read the factory ECU calibration via OBD or bench flash, then run a baseline dyno pull to measure current power, torque, and identify any existing issues before we start.

Custom Calibration

The calibration data is modified - fuel maps, injection timing, boost targets, torque limits, and throttle response. Every adjustment is tailored to your specific vehicle, not a generic file.

Flash & Verify on Dyno

The modified calibration is flashed back to the ECU and verified on the dyno. We monitor EGTs, boost, rail pressure, and air/fuel in real time. You leave with before-and-after dyno sheets.

Emissions Compliant

DPF-Safe Diesel Tuning

All our diesel tunes are DPF-safe and emissions compliant. We do not remove, bypass, or disable the diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), or any other emissions equipment.

The ECU calibration is optimised within the factory emissions framework. DPF regeneration cycles continue to operate normally. Your vehicle will continue to pass a warrant of fitness and meet New Zealand emissions standards.

This matters because DPF removal is illegal in New Zealand under the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions 2007. Removing emissions equipment can result in fines, WoF failure, and a vehicle being taken off the road. Our tunes deliver real performance gains without touching emissions hardware.

Diesel tuning is the process of modifying the calibration data inside your vehicle's ECU to optimise fuel delivery, injection timing, boost pressure, and torque limits. The result is more power, more torque, better throttle response, and in most cases improved fuel economy. At The Torque Lab, every diesel tune is custom-calibrated on our Mainline hub dyno - not a generic file.

Yes, when done properly. We tune within safe limits for your engine, turbo, and drivetrain. Every parameter is monitored in real time on the dyno - exhaust gas temperatures, boost pressure, air/fuel ratios, and rail pressure. We never push beyond what the hardware can safely handle. A dyno-calibrated remap is significantly safer than a generic mail-order tune.

A remap modifies the factory ECU calibration, which the dealer can detect. Whether this affects your warranty depends on your vehicle's age, your dealer, and the specific claim. We can return your ECU to stock calibration at any time. Many customers tune vehicles that are outside factory warranty. Contact us to discuss your situation.

A tuning box is a plug-in module that intercepts and modifies sensor signals before they reach the ECU. A diesel remap directly modifies the calibration data inside the factory ECU itself. A remap gives far more precise control - the ECU is running the correct data rather than being tricked by altered sensor signals. We recommend a proper remap over a tuning box in almost every case.
